A Word From The Chairperson of Galway Pride 2016, Bruce Henry
Galway Pride 2016 will take place next week from Monday 15 to Sunday 21 August. For a full list of events, pick up a copy of GCN or read GCN online or on iOS here.
Here’s Bruce Henry’s open letter:
Bruce Henry, Galway Pride 2016 Chairperson.
This year Galway Pride grows from a four-day celebration to a weeklong festival, taking place in the heart of Galway City from August 15 to 21. Our aim is to encourage involvement from the wider community and to highlight the great variety of people who make Galway such a vibrant and exciting place to live and visit.
With Galway having just been awarded the European Capital of Culture 2020, our team of 13 committee members are pulling out all the stops to produce a week of programming that will celebrate everything that makes our city the cultural magnet it is.
We’re moving away from the less traditional Pride events and focusing more on inclusion, diversity and the wider reaches of our community that often feel left out, particularly the trans community. As Galway has no official gay bar and our resource centre isn’t expected to open for a while yet, we believe it’s our responsibility to reach out, produce a well-rounded week of programming, and then bring everyone together for our official Pride party where we can celebrate our individuality and diversity together.
We’re committed to having a presence all year round instead of just one week out of the year and working to develop a strong community. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished and we’re so excited to share it with all of you.
We’re welcoming everyone, gay or straight, male, female and non-binary pals to join us this year for our parade and celebrations. We’re delighted to welcome James Butler, Ireland’s top snapchatter as our Parade Grand Marshal, as well as Katherine Lynch who will be teaming up with local and international Irish comedians for our Friday night comedy show. Pride just wouldn’t be pride without a knockout drag show, so Galway is delighted to welcome back Victoria Secret, Pixie Woo, Regina George and Paul Ryder to entertain us at the block party on parade day, and the main stage.
